Reflection Paper No. 5 Conservation

During our discussion about the 2nd stage of Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development which is Pre-Operational Stage.  We enhance more the importance of its function especially pupils from elementary age. Conservation means ability to know that certain properties of objects (mass, number, volume, etc.) do not change even there is a changes in appearance. Here some cases of study and observation on how conservations applied to the learning structures of the children at the ages of 2 to 7 years old:

Water – two glasses with the same amount of water. The pre-operational child when asked, they would say it’s the same. But, when the water of the second glass in transferred to a taller glass the pre-operational child says the taller glass has more water compare to the other one.

Cracker – two crackers on the same size but the other one is cracked into two. The child says not fair. When the other cracker is cracked also, the child would say it’s fair.

Stick – two sticks aligned in the same position. The pre-operational child would say it’s the same. But, when the second stick is more in an inch from the first sticks the 2nd stick is longer.

Kite – the child asked me to create kites in order play her younger sister which is 2 year old. I made two kites in the same color but different in sizes, the child identifies which of them is small and big.

Clay – two rolls of clay. The pre-operational child both clay is the same when he is asked. But, when the second day is formed into a log from, the child says its bigger has more clay.

I realized that through conservation method, children develop gradually the thinking skills they need to understand the situations.

Develop the habit of observant the behavior and characteristic of each pupils when I am become a teacher someday. Part of my responsibilities is enhancing their learning capabilities by nurturing and showing comprehensive educational materials.
